Go home to reapply H-1 visa. It is very rare that you will be denied. If so you can come back with your AP.

AP does affect if you want to change your job. Different lawyers have different understandings. I just educated my lawyer to transfer my H-1 visa. Hope it may be approved. If not, I will work with EAD. If my I-140/485 denied I will have to apply visa again from Canada. I do not see any reason I can not get GC or get visa again.

I works for non-profit organization. If you work for company, it is totally different story. You have to protect your H-1 visa as much as possible. Do not go back untill your I-140 approved at least, unless your mom is sick.
