Many Chinese visiting scientists in US Universities are supported by their Chinese employer; They got J-1 Visa.

But I am not sure for your field: journalist. If your Chinese employer can really support you, may be it is OK for you to get Visa. Try to consult with US embassy about the policy and Good luck!
