Help! AP problem

We are I-485 pending. My wife need go back to China for emergency. She has a AP valid until January 9, 2004. However, she wants to stay longer. What should we do? Can we apply for another AP while she is in China and then come back with new AP? or can we walk in to local INS office to get new AP immediately? Thank you for advice!
