You are in legal F(1or2?) status so far. When I initially changed my status from J-1 to F-1, I applied for F2 status for my wife and my wife got a approval of F-1. We went to ask local INS office and we were told it is ok. We requested INS to correct it by sending my wife a F2 approval letter, but we still got a F-1 approval letter. Four years later,my wife did not even need to change status when she went to graduate school as the record showed she was in F-1 status. But you definitely need to apply for H4 immediately. Otherwise you will be out of status.
