I think it is worth of trying. I understand that everyone needs to have a strong background, however, you also need to have a bit of luck. At the beginning, I really want to go through the LC because I have the same worrying as you do. You just never know who is your immigration officer and what is his or her judgemental standard.
Based on my own experience, I think it is very important to organize your material well, work hard on the draft of each recommendation letter, even though you have an attorney. I did most of the work as "do it by myself" with the help of my friends' It is only you who care this issue the most. This is what I learned by working with three attoneys through this GC process.
