how is life in France

I have an opportunity to move to Paris, a professor in a business school in suburban Paris.  Working conditions are pretty good, but salary level is much lower than US business schools, especially after taking into account higher tax rates and higher living costs in France. 

I have a few questions to ask friends in this discussion board.   How hard is it to learn French?  The working language is English. However, life would be difficulty in France for someone not able to speak French.   Is it easy to make friends in France?   

I have lived in the US for 15 years. While it is not easy to make friends here either, but in cities, buying chinese food/groceries is not a problem. There are chinese communities too if I miss speaking Manderin.
