  • U.S. refineries rely heavily on Canadian crude oil imports, particularly for refineries in the Midwest. These refineries are designed to process heavier, sour crude oils like those produced in Canada, especially from the oil sands. This reliance is significant, with Canada being the largest source of U.S. crude oil imports, making up 60% of the total in 2023. 
     
  • Infrastructure Limitations:
    Midwest refineries have limited flexibility to switch to other crude types due to the specific infrastructure needed to process heavy, sour Canadian crude.
