我憑記憶就記得當納粹遊行人撞死了人, 川普不譴責納粹。
2022年11月2日, 川普宴請白人至上主義者和Holocaust Denier Nick Fuentes.
The 20 Signs that Trump is a Fascist (shorter version)
Recently, military figures like Generals John Kelly and Mark Milley, who worked closely with Donald Trump, have labeled him a fascist. They join historians and experts on fascism who have said the same thing. (Even Trump’s own VP once compared him to Hitler.) This raises the question: what exactly is fascism?
There is no shortage of academic work on fascism. Experts like Chris Hedges, Jason Stanley, and John McNeill have outlined its essential elements, typically noting a set of recurring characteristics. Below is a paraphrased and combined list of fascism’s key traits, showing how Trump’s behavior aligns with all but one.
1. Inaccurate Nostalgia
Fascism mythologizes a great past, promising a return to racial and gender hierarchies that favored the in-group. Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan epitomizes this, suggesting a return to a time when minorities and women had fewer rights.
2. Authoritarian Hero Worship
Fascism fosters cult-like devotion to a single leader. Trump’s followers exhibit such loyalty, with some believing he alone tells the truth. The violence of January 6th, 2021, is a prime example of this devotion, with supporters breaking laws to defend him.
3. Theatricality
Fascism thrives on dramatic displays. Trump’s rallies, with chants like “Lock her up!” and “Build the Wall,” are ritualistic gatherings, filled with dramatic gestures and slogans.
4. Deceptive Propaganda/Newspeak
Fascists twist language to manipulate facts and undermine opponents. Trump calls the press “the enemy of the people” and uses terms like “fake news” to discredit any unfavorable reports, even as he twists reality, such as denying things he said on live television.
5. Unreality
Fascists create an alternate reality. Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 election being stolen persists despite a complete lack of evidence. His supporters continue to believe false claims, from baseless accusations of voter fraud to rumors about immigrants eating pets.
6. Anti-Intellectualism
Fascism opposes science and expertise, as critical thought makes it harder to spread lies. Trump consistently dismisses scientific evidence, from denying climate change to promoting unproven COVID-19 treatments.
7. Racism/Inequality
Fascism fears diversity and promotes racial hierarchies. From the start, Trump’s rhetoric, calling immigrants “rapists” and “criminals,” and policies like the Muslim ban, highlight this. He recently referred to immigrants as “vermin,” echoing Hitler’s dehumanizing language about Jews.
8. Victimhood/Oppositional Identity
Fascists portray themselves as victims of oppression while targeting marginalized groups. Trump frequently claims political persecution while his base attacks immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and other minorities.
9. Law and Order
Fascists claim to uphold law and order while committing crimes themselves. Trump’s administration was riddled with corruption, and he incited the illegal Capitol riot. His call to use the military against “the enemy within” mirrors fascist leaders’ tactics.
10. Hyper Militarism
Fascism is obsessed with the military. Trump’s reverence for military parades and calls for loyalty within the military, even wanting “generals like Hitler,” shows his militaristic obsession.
11. Sexual Purity/False Accusations
Fascists play on sexual anxieties and falsely accuse the out-group of sexual deviance. Trump’s rhetoric about immigrants as “rapists,” and his administration’s rollback of women’s reproductive rights, reflect these fascist tendencies.
12. Pro-Masculine/Anti-Feminine
Fascism idolizes masculinity and diminishes women’s rights. Trump’s bragging about sexual conquests and his attacks on women in leadership positions show his alignment with this trait.
13. Anti-Urban
Fascism demonizes cities, often targeting minority populations. Trump’s rhetoric about urban areas being “infested” and lawless, especially cities like Chicago and Baltimore, reflects this.
14. Selective About Benefits
Fascists portray the in-group as deserving and the out-group as lazy. Trump’s welfare cuts disproportionately impacted marginalized communities, while tax cuts benefited the rich.
15. Black and White Thinking
Fascism tolerates no nuance, seeing the world in rigid, binary terms. Trump’s approach to politics — “you’re either with me or against me” — demonstrates this.
16. Hyper Nationalism
Fascism places national identity above all. Trump’s “America First” mantra, his flag-hugging, and his rejection of global cooperation embody this hyper-nationalism.
17. Conspiratorial Thinking
Fascists are obsessed with conspiracies. Trump embraces numerous baseless theories, from birtherism to the Big Lie about the 2020 election.
18. Violence
Fascists see violence as a political tool. Trump incited violence on January 6th and has frequently encouraged aggression against political opponents.
19. Purging the Disloyal
Fascists purge those who aren’t loyal. Trump’s presidency saw constant firings of anyone who wasn’t sufficiently supportive. His plans for a second term include purging the government of dissenters.
20. Mass Mobilization
Fascism rises to power through mass political movements. Trump’s MAGA base has transformed the Republican Party, leading to the formation of a new far-right movement.
Conclusion:
Fascism is not a label to be used lightly, but the evidence points clearly to Trump’s alignment with its core principles. The signs are there, and we must recognize them before it’s too late. American may have never had a fascist president, but but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen now. Indeed, while many think that Trump is leading a new American fascist movement, he is actually just emboldening a fascism movement which has been been a part of American politics since before WWII. (Click here for my Brief History of American Fascism.) If we don’t stop this movement from resurging by crushing Trump the ballot box, the consequences could be irreversible.
