Death and the Maiden by Egon Schiele (1915)

Expressionism 作品(二)

Expressionism was a modernist movement , initially in poetry and painting, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. Expressionist artists sought to express meaning or emotional experience rather than physical reality.

Egon Schiele ( June 12 , 1890 October 31 , 1918 ) was an Austrian painter , a protégé of Gustav Klimt , and a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. Schiele’s body of work is noted for the intensity and the large number of self-portraits he produced. The twisted body shapes that characterise Schiele’s paintings and drawings make the artist a notable exponent of Expressionism

Death and the Maiden was painted after his long time relationship girl-friend Wally left Schiele because of his choice of marring the more socially acceptable Edith, The abandonment led him to paint Death and the Maiden.
