Lin fell in to a trap set by Mao.

You analysis is too shallow, my thought is that Lin fell into a trap set by Mao. The reason for Mao to remove Lin is Lin already had too much power then, especially the power to control military force. Mao knew that Lin had advocated "four great" for Mao, and appraised Mao as a genius in developing Marxism and Leninism in 1960s, then Mao did not against the genius idea, but at Lushan Mountain meeting in 1970s, Mao disagreed the genius theory, and started snapping the face of Lin. I do not think Lin really like to be a president then, there are evidence shown that Mao suggested Lin to be president, then, recant that he did not suggest to set up president (can you believe a republic nation no president?), at that time, whatever Lin proposed would be targeted by Mao, Lin's influence too strong and threat Mao's position that is the real reason to have Lin's tragedy.
