Australia's worst railway accident was in 1977 in the Sydney suburb of Granville, in which 83 people died. Here's a chronology of the worst rail accidents in the country.

October24, 2002 Adelaide Four people died when the Ghan interstate train and a bus carrying schoolchildren collided at a level crossing .

July 12 2002 Nine people injured when a passenger train slammed into a derailed coal train at Hexham, near Newcastle.

December 2, 1999 Glenbrook (Blue Mountains)

Seven die, 51 injured. Lithgow commuter train slams into rear of Indian Pacific.

August 18, 1999 Zanthus (250km east of Kalgoorlie)

Twenty people injured when the Indian Pacific hit a stationary freight train.

July 7, 1999 Sydney (between Horn*****y and Asquith stations):

Three passengers injured when a CityRail train derailed.

June 9, 1998 Sydney

Empty eight-car "Tangara" train derailed at Concord West. The driver was seriously injured, the guard received slight injuries.

May 19, 1998 Robertson (south-west of Wollongong)

Two train drivers killed when their freight train derailed

January 14, 1996 Hines Hill (240km east of Perth)

A train driver and a young boy died when a freight train collided with a fuel train.

May 6, 1990 Cowan (north of Sydney)

Six people died when an Intercity express train crashed into a vintage steam train - "3801"

January 18, 1977 Granville, Sydney

Australia's worst-ever railway disaster. Eighty-three people were killed when a commuter train derailed and crashed into the pillars of a bridge bringing it down on top of the train.

January 16, 1976 Glenbrook, NSW

One person died and 10 injured when a goods train collided with the rear of a passenger train at which had stalled.

February 7, 1969 Violet Town, Victoria

Nine people killed as a Sydney-Melbourne express, travelling at 120km/h was in collision with a goods train.

February 26, 1960 Bogantungan, Queensland

Seven people died when a bridge collapsed as the Rockhampton-bound "Midlander" passed over it. The bridge had been weakened by flood water.

December 1, 1956 Wallumbilla, Queensland

Five people die in an accident.

December 19, 1953 Sydenham, Sydney

Five people died and 748 were injured when two passenger trains collided.

June 1, 1952 Boronia, Victoria

Nine died when a train collided with a bus on a level crossing.

May 7, 1952 Berala, Sydney

A rail accident killed 10 and injured 81.

February 24, 1951 Horsham, Victoria

Eleven died when a train collided with a bus on a level crossing .

June 30, 1948 Rocky Ponds (near Harden, NSW)

Four people killed and 19 injured in mail train derailment.

October 18, 1947 Tamaree, Queensland

Eight people killed when mail trains collided.

May 5, 1947 Camp Mountain, Queensland

Derailment killed 16 people.

Jan 20, 1944 Brooklyn, NSW

Seventeen died when a mail train collided with a bus on a level crossing.

May 8, 1943 Wodonga, Victoria

Twenty five servicemen and women were killed when a train collided with their bus on a level crossing.

September 13, 1926 Murulla, NSW

A Sydney-bound passenger train collided with runaway goods wagons killing 27 people.

June 10, 1926 Aberdeen, NSW

A Sydney-Bri*****ane express fell from a timber bridge. Ffive people died, 50 were injured.

June 9, 1925 Traverston, Queensland.

Ten people killed when a train derailed on a bridge.

November 6, 1920 Wokalup, Queensland

Nine people died in a timber train crash.

August 30, 1920 Hurtsville, Sydney

Five people werekilled when a train was shunted into a standing locomotive .

March 16, 1914 Exeter, NSW

Fourteen people died when 2 trains collided in fog .

July 18, 1910 Richmond, Victoria

Nine people were killed when their train hit a locomotive in fog.

April 20, 1908 Sunshine (near Melbourne)

Ttwo trains collided in the station killing 44 people.

Feb 15, 1901 Sydenham, NSW

A derailment killed seven people.
