THE Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce says that in his view the Coalition's ''direct action'' policy is just as meaningless a ''gesture''

The goal of the direct action plan was to reduce Australia's emissions by 5 per cent by 2020 - a minimum target accepted by both political parties - but Senator Joyce, who describes himself as a climate sceptic, said there was no point in talking about spending more than four years in advance because ''neither you nor I will be here in 2020, so we don't know what will happen then.''
