Woman beaten and strangled October 4, 2009
A MAN is in police custody after allegedly beating a woman with a wine bottle and threatening to kill her during an eight-hour ordeal.

Police said Margaret Mao, 45, became involved in an altercation at her Macquarie Park home with a 20-year-old man early on Friday.

Yesterday, Simon Xu, 20, appeared in Parramatta Local Court charged with attempted murder, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and detaining a person to obtain an advantage.

Police allege Mr Xu hit Mrs Mao with a wine bottle on her shoulders, back and arms, before strangling her until she lost consciousness.

When she regained consciousness, Mr Xu allegedly sat on her and threatened to kill her.

Mrs Mao managed to escape about 8am to a nearby shopping centre before police were notified. She was taken to Ryde Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mr Xu was later arrested at the Cottonwood Crescent home where the alleged attack took place.

Police said Mrs Mao and Mr Xu were known to each other.

Mr Xu did not apply for bail yesterday.
