In Australia, no matter in any state, you are always at least have 9 days as public holiday, even those days are in Saturday or Sunday. Tell your colleague she/he is wrong.

Only New Zealand may lose 2 public holidays: ANZAC day and Waitangi day, if they are unfortunately in weekend. However, New Zealand has 11 public holidays in total.
