i don't think Darger had many choices in terms of drawing skills/techniques/art training, but he had choosen the best: follow his heart and imagination!
His colors, alone, is the undying burning fire in the darkness! that's what i meant, Passion, which was the mere joy in his simple life and Inspiration to viewers like us.
the dilemma that most "artists" have been facing come from the barren land of their inner world!
to me, self reflection and honesty are the required "elements" for being a real artist! you sound that you already have them! :)
