古印度時期盛行一種修練方式，苦行僧蓬頭垢麵、衣衫襤褸，帶著象征濕婆神的三叉杖，邊走邊吟誦古經文。苦行僧必須忍受劇烈的痛苦，如絕食、躺在布滿釘子的床上、行走在火熱的木炭上、喝尿吃屎等不合常理的事情。圖為苦行僧樹上練習瑜加。
