democracies are neither guaranteed to survive nor self-sustaining; that democracies are by their nature messy, stress-filled cacophonies of competing voices, viewpoints, and needs; and -- perhaps most critically in today's world -- that there are large numbers of people for whom "the appeal of authoritarianism is eternal" because "they are bothered by complexity. They dislike divisiveness. They prefer unity. A sudden onslaught of diversity -- diversity of opinions, diversity of experiences -- makes them angry."
