這首已流傳了一個世紀的歌曲，人們對於它的誕生地依舊頗多爭議。有人認為歌中唱的“紅河”是指德克薩斯州的紅河，所以1936年和1941年拍攝的與歌曲《紅河穀》同名的影片，就是以德克薩斯州的紅河為外景，並且把《紅河穀》作為主題旋律貫串於整部影片。也有人認為“紅河”是指紐約州的莫哈河，因為有位開拓者傑姆斯•克瑞根於1896年發表的一首填詞歌曲就和這首《紅河穀》內容極為相似。還有人認為，紅河是指由加拿大西部流入溫尼佩格湖的那條河流……

但通常人們總把這首歌視為加拿大民歌。
