Dear NUAA friends,
I am writing to ask you for help on behalf of a former Nanda graduate, who has been an undaunted fighter against death for 15 years, who has made a difference in Nanjing’s disabled community, and now a patient himself desperately needing help. I hope his story would bring a different perspective to your life and warmth to your heart the way it did to me.
Li Ming Di, a classmate of mine, is a Biology graduate of class 1987. 15 years ago, just as he was starting his career that was full of promises, his dream was shattered by a devastating diagnose, Muscular Dystrophy. Despite the fact that this is a disease that will only get worse till the end, MD never gives up. It is with extraordinary mental strength and a positive attitude towards this seemingly unfair life that MD has managed to stay alive. He read all the references about this disease, shared his knowledge with other patients, and sought updated medical information. He bought a computer with money donated to him, wrote articles that were published and won prizes. Meanwhile, Li MD also kept close contact with the disabled community in Nanjing. He encouraged other patients to fight and stand up for themselves, and he initiated projects to benefit lives of disabled. While it is still uncommon to have a ramp built at an apartment building for wheelchair access in China, he managed to persuade the city to do that. Such deeds had won him reputation in the community and he is very proud of being able to contribute using the much limited strength and movement left in his physical body.
His love of life, his strong will to fight with unfortunate fate, and his talent had won him not only true love, an angel sent to him (see this blog for his love story), but also blessings and support from many Nanjing citizens.
Right now, he is still struggling to hold on to his life, with his loved ones surrounding him, helping him as much as we can. The cost in ICU is three to four thousand Yuan for each day, since July. 19. His family owes the hospital at least 30 thousand just for this time around. His brother has given everything he could, and his aged parents have had long been broke with the medical treatment of their beloved son.
I sincerely hope that you could reach out your helping hand. Together, we can make a life to live, a true love to last, and a tomorrow to look forward to…
