Hate: v. tr.
1.
a. To feel hostility or animosity toward.
b. To detest.
2. To feel dislike or distaste for: hates washing dishes.
Hate在聖經裏有多重意思，不是我們一般所認為的咬牙切齒的“恨”。即便查現在的英文字典也一樣能看出來。就像字典裏給的動詞的第2個意思。To feel dislike or distaste for: hates washing dishes。
而路加福音14：26中的”hate” to mean loving to a lesser degree.比如創世紀29：31-33When Jehovah came to see that Le´ah was hated, he then opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. 32 And Le´ah became pregnant and brought a son to birth and then called his name Reu´ben, for she said: “It is because Jehovah has looked upon my wretchedness, in that now my husband will begin to love me.” 33 And she became pregnant again and brought a son to birth and then said: “It is because Jehovah has listened, in that I was hated and so he gave me also this one.” Hence she called his name Sim´e·on.
這裏的”hate”是dislike或者loving to a lesser degree （compares to Rachel），可以翻譯成冷落或者不受寵，如果Le´ah真是被嫉惡如仇，咬牙切齒地恨，她怎麽可能和雅各生孩子呢？同理，申命記21：15 “In case a man comes to have two wives, the one loved and the other hated, and they, the loved one and the hated one, have borne sons to him, and the firstborn son has come to be of the hated one”,以弗所書5：28-29 In this way husbands ought to be loving their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself, 29 for no man ever hated his own flesh; but he feeds and cherishes it, as the Christ also does the congregation。這裏的”hate”包括路加福音14：26都是loving to a lesser degree的意思。
出埃及記20：12要孝敬父母。以弗所書6：1“你們做兒女的，要為了主的緣故服從父母。這是正義的：第一條帶應許的命令說，“要孝敬父母，這樣你就必蒙福，在地上得享長壽。””如果路加14：26翻譯成恨，不是和上麵的經文自相矛盾了嗎？所以比較好的翻譯是“誰到我這裏來，愛我不勝過愛自己的父親，母親，妻子，兒女，兄弟，姊妹，甚至自己的性命，就不能做我的門徒。”
