第二章

　　第三十節

　　“Moon，for what do you wait？”

　　“To salute the sun for whom I must make way。”

　　“月兒呀，你在等候什麽呢？”

　　“要致敬意於我必須給他讓路的太陽。”

　　第三十一節

　　The trees come up to my window like the yearning voice of the dumb earth。

　　綠樹長到了我的窗前，仿佛是喑啞的大地發出的渴望的聲音。

　　第三十二節

　　His own mornings are new surprises to God。

　　上帝自己的清晨，在他自己看來也是新奇的。

　　第三十三節

　　Life finds its wealth by the claims of the world，and its worth by the claimsof love。

　　生命因了“世界”的要求，得到他的資產，因了愛的要求，得到他的價值。

　　第三十四節

　　The dry river-bed finds no thanks for its past。

　　幹的河床，並不感謝他的過去。

　　第三十五節

　　The bird wishes it were a cloud。

　　The cloud wishes it were a bird。

　　鳥兒願為一朵雲。

　　雲兒願為一隻鳥。

　　第三十六節

　　The waterfall sings，“I find my song，when I find my freedom。”

　　瀑布歌道：“我得到自由時便有歌聲了。”

　　第三十七節

　　I cannot tell why this heart languishes in silence。

　　It is for small needs it never asks，or knows or remembers。

　　我不能說出這心為什麽那樣默默地頹喪著。

　　那小小的需要，他是永不要求，永不知道，就不記著的。

　　第三十八節

　　Woman，when you move about in your household service your limbs singlike a hill stream among its pebbles。

　　婦人，你在料理家事的時候，你的手足歌唱著，正如山間的溪水歌唱著在小石中流過。

　　第三十九節

　　The sun goes to cross the Western sea，leaving its last salutation to the East。

　　太陽橫過西方的海麵時，對著東方，致他的最後的敬禮。

　　第四十節

　　Do not blame your food because you have no appetite。

　　不要因為你自己沒有胃口，而去責備你的食物。

　　第四十一節

　　The trees，like the longings of the earth，stand a-tiptoe to peep at theheaven。

　　群樹如表示大地的願望似的，豎趾立著，向天空窺望。

　　第四十二節

　　You smiled and talked to me of nothing and I felt that for this I had beenwaiting long。

　　你微微地笑著，不同我說什麽話，而我覺得，為了這個，我已等待得太久了。

　　第四十三節

　　The fish in the water is silent，the animal on the earth is noisy，the bird in theair is singing。

　　But Man has in him the silence of the sea，the noise of the earth and themusic of the air。

　　水裏的遊魚是沉默的，陸地上的獸類是喧鬧的，空中的飛鳥是歌唱著的；但是人類卻兼有了海裏的沉默，地上的喧鬧，與空中的音樂。

　　第四十四節

　　The world rushes on over the strings of the lingering heart making the musicof sadness。

　　“世界”在躊躇之心的琴弦上跑過去，奏出憂鬱的樂聲。

　　第四十五節

　　He has made his weapons his gods。

　　When his weapons win he is defeated himself。

　　他把他的刀劍當做他的上帝。

　　當他的刀劍勝利時他自己卻失敗了。

　　第四十六節

　　God finds himself by creating。

　　上帝從創造中找到他自己。

　　第四十七節

　　Shadow，with her veil drawn，follows light in secret meekness，with her silentsteps of love。

　　陰影戴上她的麵幕，秘密地，溫順地，用她的沉默的愛的腳步，跟在“光”後邊。

　　第四十八節

　　The stars are not afraid to appear like fireflies。

　　群星不怕顯得像螢火蟲那樣。

　　第四十九節

　　I thank thee that I am none of the wheels of power but I am one with theliving creatures that are crushed by it。

　　謝謝上帝，我不是一個權力的輪子，而是被壓在這輪下的活人之一。

　　第五十節

　　The mind，sharp but not broad，sticks at every point but does not move。

　　心是尖銳的，不是寬博的。它執著在每一點上，卻並不活動。

　　第五十一節

　　Your idol is shattered in the dust to prove that God’d dust is greater than your idol。

　　你的偶像委散在塵土中了，這可證明上帝的塵土比你的偶像還偉大。

　　第五十二節

　　Man does not reveal himself in his history， 14 he struggles up through it。

　　人在他的曆史中表現不出他自己，他在曆史中奮鬥著露出頭角。

　　第五十三節

　　While the glass lamp rebukes the earthen for calling it cousin，the moon rises，and the glass lamp，with a bland smile，calls her，“My dear， dear sister。”

　　明月出來時，玻璃燈卻溫和地微笑著，叫明月為-“我親愛的，親愛的姊姊。”玻璃燈因為瓦燈叫他做表兄而責備瓦燈，但當 54 Like the meeting of the seagulls and the waves we meet and come near。The seagulls fly off，the waves roll away and we depart。

　　我們如海鷗之與波濤相遇似的，遇見了，走近了。海鷗飛去，波濤滾滾地流開，我們也分別了。

　　第五十四節

　　My day is done，and I am like a boat drawn on the beach，listening to thedance-music of the tide in the evening。

　　日間的工作完了，於是我像一隻拖在海灘上的小船，靜靜地聽著晚潮跳舞的樂聲。

　　第五十五節

　　Life is given to us，we earn it by giving it。

　　我們的生命是天賦的，我們唯有獻出生命，才能得到生命。

　　第五十六節

　　We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility。當我們是大為謙卑的時候，便是我們最近於偉大的時候。

　　第五十七節

　　The sparrow is sorry for the peacock at the burden of its tail。麻雀看見孔雀負擔著它的翎尾，替它擔憂。

　　第五十八節

　　Never be afraid of the moments這-thus sings the voice of the everlasting。

　　第五十九節

　　The hurricane seeks the shortest road by the no-road，and suddenly endsits search in the Nowhere。

　　颶風於無路之中尋求最短之路，又突然地在“無何有之國”終止它的尋求了。
