wsj: Chen, a statistics and data science major at Yale University who plays several musical instrumentsand has been known to sneak away from the pack of skaters to watch NBA games, was born in Salt Lake City as the youngest of five children to Chinese immigrants.
He moved to California with his mother to train with Arutyunyan, even as she struggled cobbling together the money to pay for his coaching. Arutyunyan, who has now been his coach for more than a decade, said he would sometimes slip Chen the cash back after Chen’s mother had paid for lessons. Chen said that he would then attempt to push the dollars into his coach’s pocket and quickly run off.
