i went in late september, from northeast entrance - billings, montana. Oh what an experience, at 11,000 feet, just snow and sun, and the lakes along road are really beautiful, a little scary at the top though - saw some abandoned car there from snow storm few days ago. if you are confident driver, i recommend this route.
