For trails. The one I got is a Vista Cx. It's got color display, expandable memory (via micro-SD), built-in electronic compass and altometer, and long battery life (32 hrs). Very compact, and you can operate it with one hand. It is capable for auto navigation too if the proper map is loaded. It simply won't say "turn right onto washington, ..." instead it beeps. There's another model with high-sensitivity receiver. You get better reception under dense tree covers and in canyons, as well as presumbly more accurate triangulation. The trade off is the battery life is short at only 18 hours.
For dedicated auto navigation, the Nuvi series are very good. The best vale would be the nuvi 350 if you don't care about bluetooth. Text-to-voice is nice.
