黃石公園是世界上最原始最古老的國家公園。根據1872年3月1日的美國國會法案，黃石公園“為了人民的利益被批準成為公眾的公園及娛樂場所”，同時也是“為了使她所有的樹木，礦石的沉積物，自然奇觀和風景，以及其他景物都保持現有的自然狀態而免於破壞”。最初吸引人們的興趣並使黃石成為國家公園的顯著特征是地質方麵的地熱現象，這裏擁有比世界上其他所有地方都多的間歇泉和溫泉、彩色的黃石河大峽穀、化石森林，以及黃石湖。

黃石公園，這個這個冰火磨礪的世界、犬牙交錯的幻境，誕生於近兩百萬年前的一次火山爆發，全境99％尚未開發，這是一片廣袤而潔淨的原始自然區，分布在落基山脈最高峰，豐沛的雨水是這裏成為美國眾多大河的發源地，在這個平均高度為8000英尺的開闊火成岩高原上，有山巒、石林、衝蝕熔岩流和黑曜岩山等地質奇觀。

黃石公園裏到處都有熱噴泉，同時這些噴泉也時時刻刻根據地可運動而變化，轉移。其中的蒸氣船間歇泉(Steamboat Geyser)已經從好久才噴一次變成幾乎每天都在噴了；還有一些間歇泉的噴發高度更是屢創曆史新高。
