We stayed in Merced the first night. Although it is 60 miles outside the Yosemite NP, it took us 2 hours to get there. I think Oakhurst, Oakdale, and Mariposa (not Mariposa grove) are better. However hotels in these little towns are expensive (most of them over $100). You should book a hotel ASAP. You will have trouble to find a hotel room without a reservation in long weekends even in Merced.
You may stay in Fresno for the second night if you want to go to the Sequoia NP. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours drive.
Your plan should be different than mine because some roads, such as the Tioga road are still closed in Memorial weekend. Check this site for updated road condition: http://www.nps.gov/yose/now/conditions.htm
Days Inn in oakhurst, about 15 miles south of the park
