Suggestions on touring San Franciscon, Please

Any friends knows whether I can take a train to go to San Francisco? I'd like to be there for 4 or 5 days. I live near Los Angeles. Any good attractions? Will I have enough time for Aquarium in Monterey? Also cheap but safe hotels there? Thanks a lot. Is it a good idea for children to visit the wine place? They love wine and it might be interesting for them to see how to make it but I don't want them to become addicted to it. They are underage kids.
