On May 12, 2008, in Sichuan, China a 7.9 level earthquake happened all of a sudden. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives, their families, parts of their bodies, and their belongings. Among them, the most devastating tragedy is the loss of the children. More than 7,000 classrooms have collapsed. All the children were having classes. The spring breeze was turning the book pages. No one can expect, within seconds, the disaster that came cruelly on their small bodies. Most of them were buried under the debris. Many of them have lost their lives or their body parts. Imagine just a few minutes ago, their lives were as beautiful as the flowers.

This is a song on Youtube dedicated to the kids who died in the May 12th earthquake in China. Here is my rough translation. The singer could not continue in the middle of the song.……….

Children, are you cold?
Your thin school uniforms are in tatters.

Children, are you in pain?
The broken wings haven’t been wrapped up…

Children, are you lonely?
Your loving parents want to keep you here…

Children, can you please talk?
Or, do you have no concerns now….

In your blossoming years with dreams
You withered suddenly

With all the dreams unfulfilled.

At the edge of life and death,
You struggle painfully

The silent tears coming down,
The little hands reaching high for help

My dearest and dearest children,
Please do not be afraid
Love will melt all the suffering

Children, do not feel helpless
Children, do not feel lonely
We are deeply concerned about you even if we are at the corner of the world.

Children, please do not cry,
Children, please do not be afraid,
Our hearts are together, no distance,
Where there is love, there is home.

Towns and towns of people have lost their children. Parents were desperate knowing they lost their children forever without saying goodbye. Words can never describe such pain.

Also, towns and towns of children have become orphans.

There was one story. When the rescue team was unearthing the rubble, they found a woman in a strange pose. She was kneeling down with her hands on the ground; her body was disformed as she tried to support the collapsed wall. She was dead. After some effort, the debris was cleared and rescue team reached the woman. They found a baby still alive underneath her. He was wrapped in a red quilt and appeared to be about 3 or 4 months old. He was not injured at all with his mother’s protection. He was still sleeping when people took him out of there. His peaceful face gave all people warmth. The doctor came to check the baby. They found a cell phone in the quilt with a text message on it: “My dear baby, if you can survive, please remember that I love you.” Nobody could hold back their tears when they saw it.

The Chinese government has done its best to do the rescue work. So far, 130,000 troops were sent to help with the rescue. At first, military helicopters were forced to turn back due to the weather conditions. All roads and bridges were damaged and blocked due to the earthquake. There are still some aftershocks until now. The earthquake areas are mountainous. There are many mountain slides happening all the time. The troops marched for miles over the mountains by foot to the rescue scene in order to save lives at first time.

So far, more than 22,000 are confirmed dead, but it is possible the toll may reach 50,000. More than 150,000 are injured. With loss of everything, the survivors are facing much harder lives.

We are calling everyone who wants to help, for food and accommodations for survivors. We need your help in rebuilding homes. No matter more or less, your love will bring hopes for them.
