-Snorkling gear is available for rent at many rental shops. You can even rent at one island and drop off at another.
-As I recall correctly, you can snorkel at many beaches free. The locals usually know the good beaches for snorkeling and turtles. Some beaches do charge a entrance fee, such as Hanauma Bay in Oahu.
-I wear contact lense myself, not a problem.
-ABC stores in Hawaii also selling cheap snorkeling masks. Don't buy there - they leak.
-I've seen snorkeling gear sold at Costco -seasonal here on US continent. You might check there in Hawaii - maybe they sell these all year around there. I believe it's over $20.
-There are snorkeling day cruise - to Molokoni in Maui, for example.
-You can also go snuba-diving if you don't have scuba diving liscence. Snuba-diving allows you to go underwater for 30-40 feet.
