Days 1–5: Departure and Cape Town
Cape Town has more than its fair share of jaw-dropping scenery. The city, which sits on South Africa’s Cape Peninsula, boasts golden Atlantic beaches, dazzling botanical gardens, and Table Mountain National Park, a flattop mountain with unrivaled city views. That natural splendor helped boost the city to the top of the New York Times’ list of 52 Places to Go in 2014, and Cape Town was designated as this year’s World Design Capital.
- Free time: After an included orientation tour on day 2, your itinerary in Cape Town is entirely up to you. Hike rugged trails, shop along the trendy V&A Waterfront, or simply wander the city’s storied streets.
- Must-see attraction: About an hour outside of the city, the Cape Point nature reserve features zebras and ostriches, as well as Cape Point, a scenic cliff at the tip of the peninsula.
- Optional excursions include a half-day tour of Cape Town and Table Mountain on day 3.
Days 6–9: Kruger National Park and Return to United States
Set along South Africa’s northeast border, Kruger National Park is home to an estimated 1,500 lions, 12,000 elephants, 2,500 buffaloes, 1,000 leopards, and 5,000 black and white rhinos. And that’s just counting the Big 5—the 5-million-acre park also boasts hippos, giraffes, and warthogs along with a slew of smaller mammals, reptiles, and birds.
- Full-day guided safari is included with this deal. Hop in open vehicles to go in search of the park’s 145 mammal species with help from an experienced local guide.
- Scenic drives: As the group makes its way to and from the park, you’ll pass through miles of countryside dotted with citrus groves, rural villages, and lofty mountains, including the highest peaks in the province of Mpumalanga.
