美國眾議院退伍軍人事務委員會主席高野(Mark Takano),率領議員訪問團周四(25日)晚間抵台,為這個月第二個乘搭專機訪台的美國議員訪問團。高野一行周五(26日)拜會台灣總統蔡英文時表示,未來美國官員來訪台灣會變成常態。
台灣傳媒報道指訪問團關注台灣後備軍人動員能力,蔡英文致辭時回應表示,明年一月主管後備軍人的退輔會將派員常駐華府。蔡英文會見美國議員訪問團成員時表示,台美在許多領域都持續深化夥伴關係。就在上周四(18日),台灣首批F-16V作戰隊成軍。F-16V的升級和接裝,都是台美國防工業合作的成果。
美國在台協會(AIT)晚間表示,此行程為國會議員出訪印太地區的一環,訪問團將與台灣資深領袖會麵,討論美台關係、區域安全,以及其他與雙方利益相關的重要議題。
訪團成員、眾議員史羅金(Elissa Slotkin)稍早推文表示,訪台消息傳出後,其辦公室收到來自中國大使館的訊息,要求她取消旅行。但就像訪問其它地點一樣,議員團到此是為了解區域,並重申美國對台承諾。
史羅金在推特寫道,在與駐韓美軍過完感恩節後,她剛抵達台灣,將與這裏的領袖討論一係列經濟與國家安全議題;她並提及台灣有晶片大廠,供應鏈問題肯定會是討論議題之一。
