I also dont think your young kids would enjoy the tour itself - basically it is a huge Mayan ruin site involving lots of walking on the site, and a very loooong drive - whether you take a rental car or take a tour - the distance is the same - one motorway.
You are talking about a 15-16 hours daytrip. I honestly think your kids would be worn out by this. (probably the parents as well).
If you have not been in Mexico before, a friendly reminder - it is not the same as in U.S. - driving-wise, and the insurance ...
You can, however, take a car to drive down to Tulum where is the ONLY Mayan Ruin by the sea - a much smaller ruin and a small beach - depends on the time of the year - Winter time, the sea is rough so the beach is NOT swimable.
If you MUST go visit a ruin, Tulum would be a much better choice than Chichen Itza whether you join a tour or drive yourself. Chichen Itza is much easier to access from Merida, not from Cancun/Playa del Carmen.
Again, driving in Mexico is very different than driving in U.S. - from the perceptives of road conditions, insurances, police, etc etc etc
