The whole length is about 2200 miles/3500kms, which takes average people 3 months to finish. Start from Georgia in late spring /early summer and walk all the way to Maine before fall. Most people have to prepare one year in advance , not only for physical fitness, but also for easy-to-cook and Light weight foods like trail mix, beef jerky, dried veggies, MREs.... Because there are not many towns/ villages but only a few service stations along the trail, you have to pack certain days of food in different sized packages to cover a certain distance from one station to another. Label them and give all the food packages except the 1st one to family or friends to mail to the stations accordingly upon your request. Thus, you only carry about 7- 10 days of food at a time plus your tent, sleeping bag, cookware, trekking poles and other outdoor essentials. Planning and timing is everything.
