Yes,this type of sequential runs of light colored ashlar stone and darker colored orange brick was originally created during Byzantine Empire (a.k.Eastern Roman Empire). Byzantine architecture style was one of the greatest in world architecture history. It had tremendously influenced the later on architecture style in eastern europe and islamic world, as weel as to some medieval architcture till early renaissance.

The Mezquita in Cordoba was oringinally a medieval islamic mosqure. that's why. :)
