there were some cases before that some US citizens wanted to visit Cuba for cigar/woman/business/whatever, so they successfully skipped off the Cuba-related travel records part from their itinery and made the trip.not long afterwards FBI was able to find the trace and gives warnings to these people, threatening to confiscate the passport..
this is ridiculous, but it is real.under the current unstable conditions you better be safe than sorry.
my guess is the kid will not have real trouble but he needs to have good explanations each time about his travel documents, since China won't recognize his US citizenship, there may be more trouble on the China side.
