I highly suggest you require a copy of the original letter from USCIS. Unless the person who sent you the email is your school lawyer, otherwise, go get input from other lawyers. Sometimes, if not often, school administrative staff may not understand well what USCIS means.
Also you'd better weighing the time/effort/potential trouble/risk you have by going out of U.S. and travel back....then find ways to get H1 extension...probably you will get EAD quite soon by that time. Why not just take some vacation....just a thought.
