You had better write the statement no more than 2 pages. It describes your work plans, for example, you want to seek a faculty position, a research scientist in a national research laboratory or in an industrial company, etc. and  what research projects you plan to work in your area emphasizing on the project importance (not need to describe the project methods or procedure).
