buy a copy of the Bible that is of the larger size and place it on your desk.  If anyone asks about it, just say you are reading it.  No need to pretend to be religious if you are not.

Don't be riled up by his unequal treatment of the employees, that is his trick; to make you distracted and think your problem is the other employees.

Stay professional and stick to the issue, even if he does not (when he tries to insinuate about your competence.)  Do not react to his antics, which has power only if you offer resistance (you know you are competent for the job; it is not an issue for you to acknowledge.)  You want him to think that you hold him up to a higher standard (by letting him know that you have a standard.)

Smile and have a good posture, which tells others how you think of yourself, and their treatment of you is influenced by that.  A sinister manipulator fears the cheerful and self-assured.
