The Ford Mustang Is Officially Germany's Most Popular Sports Car

Ford's decision to take the sixth-generation Mustang global has paid dividends, since it has become the most popular new sports car in Germany.

According to government data as reported by Automotive News, German sales of the Mustang this year have eclipsed those of local favorites the Porsche 911 and Audi TT, topping almost 6,000 units. Even the new 718 Boxster and Cayman aren't proving as popular as the American muscle car.

Of the 6,000 Mustangs sold in Germany in the last 12 months, about one-third have been for the convertible model and most have been optioned with the range-topping 5.0-liter V8. This is despite significantly higher fuel prices in Germany and growing demand for the V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder models stateside.

With the Mustang's update of 2014, the American manufacturer opened up sales to 81 more countries than ever before and for the first time, builds the car in both left and right-hand drive configurations. Since sales of RHD models started just over a year ago, about 27,000 have been sold.

Beyond its popularity in Germany, Ford says the Mustang is the best selling sports car in the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. It has also proved popular in Australia and China with 3,300 and 3,800 sales respectively.
