Depends on the insurance company. Some will not use accidents against you if you are not at fault. Some will still treat you as a not very safe driver. The safest way is just try to not let insurance company know. Also, different insurance compnies have different ways and sources to collect data. Some just use claim data and some also use police report data. Also, when your car is in accident, you have to fill out some forms to report to the state motor vehicle department. I believe that's one of the sources for Carfax, etc. to collect accident and car history data. This are just some thoughts in my head and not necessarily accurate and thorough.
