The name of the employee was Qin Chen. He was looking for an internal transfer to work in another team. But it is alleged that his manager convinced him to stay on his team until the end of the quarter, and that he would give him a good performance rating so he could switch over the team. Facebook uses something called "stack ranking," a management technique that's common in Silicon Valley and has been used in the past by both Microsoft and Amazon. The top four categories, "Redefines," "Greatly Exceeds Expectations," "Exceeds," and "Meets All" can be applied to no more than 85 percent of the workforce. The lower categories, "Meets Most," "Meets Some," and "Does Not Meet," mean an employee may be fired. When the performance season wrapped up, the manager betrayed him and gave him a “meets most” rating, which essentially blocks your ability to transfer teams.
Qin was later put on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) which is the path to getting fired. The final straw came when there was a SEV (Severe Site Event) where production servers go down due to some technical error, like a crash. Qin was assigned the SEV Review, and just an hour before the review he jumped to his death from the main building. If this allegation is true, this is a serious case of workplace bullying— the PIP plan, the blocking of internal transfer, the SEV Review. Not to mention that he was on H-1B visa, so his ability to remain in US was at serious risk here and he was completely at the mercy of his company. He was in the advertising group, which is a high stress group and a small technical issue can cause millions of dollars in revenue loss. Facebook confirmed Chen’s death was a suicide in a statement after numerous people gathered outside the company’s headquarters on Thursday to demand Justice for Qin.
