被害人楊新在加拿大的時候還同上過幾節課,就這樣被殺真是很震驚。在MemorialUniversityofNewfoundland拿了BBA,後來在Subway做了一段時間經理助理，同時考GMAT。
學習很用功，每學期都上6門課，是個很激進而且有目的的人。以前在Library的時候跟她聊天，她說她很喜歡奮鬥裏的文章，還記得她曾經說“不在國外混出個名堂就不回國”。
