When my Mom came to visit me this summer, the most useful English word she learned is "restroom". She went to a bus tour with my friend's mother. They wanted to go to the bathroom, so they asked "Where is WC?", but the Americans didn't undertand them. My mother remember that I taught her "restroom", so she said "restroom" and was immediately understood.
This is just one simple example of how disengaged our English teaching is from the real life. And to tell you the truth,I don't even know what "WC" stands for.
"Henry VIII and his 6 wives" was on PBS tonight. I never thought it would be so fascinating. I started looking for more information online and found out, besides other interesting historical facts, that WC could actually come from "Water Closet", the world's first flushing toilet invented by Harrington during the Tudors!
