Daylily (
Hemerocallis)
PEAK SEASON: early summer to frost
FAVORITE SELECTIONS: hybrids have more color selection.
- “Stellade Oro" and "Happy Returns" - dwarf daylilies, grow 1 to 2 feet tall, everblooming and tidy.
- "Prairie Blue" - lavender with blue eyes and green throats, dwarf.
- "Little Grapette" - tiny purple flowers and yellow throats.
- "Darling Deception" - heavily ruffled lavender flowers with deep purple eyes and edges and yellow throats.
GARDEN COMPANIONS: Daylilies look best in a sunny flower bed all to themselves. But they look good in informal flower gardens, too, where they hide the dying foliage of spring bulbs and add a welcome dash or bright color in lightly shaded areas.
Yellow daylilies complement blue-flowered plants such as
- Veronica "Sunny Border Blue"
- Salvia nemorosa "May Night"
- Campanula "Blue Chips"
- Geranium "Johnson's Blue"
