Daily Declaration of New Life – A Body Filled with the Spirit
● Pastor Jiang Yongliu
The body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead also. (James 2:26)
Man's body was created to be the dwelling place of God; Adam’s body was the temple of the Holy Spirit. When Adam was created, God breathed Himself into Adam’s body, filling it with power and glory. As a result, Adam did not realize he was naked, nor did he know his eyes could judge the world.
Imagine the description of the Most Holy Place in the Old Testament—God dwelled in the sanctuary made by human hands, and it was filled with His glory and power, so much so that the high priest could not stand to minister. The glory and power of God would cause people to fall prostrate.
Adam’s body back then was beyond imagination—full of power and glory. His abilities were extraordinary. His words had authority to govern the earth and bring all creation into obedience. His body was completely holy, without sin or sickness. It was a living body, untouched by death. More than that, I firmly believe Adam’s body did not even know fatigue, because there was no curse, no sweating or toiling lifestyle.
However, when Adam sinned, the Spirit of God departed from his body, and evil spirits and the devil became the master of his body. Death entered into Adam. Sin, through Adam, was passed on to all humanity. All of Adam’s descendants live under the dominion of sin and the authority of death. Therefore, the Bible says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, and after that comes judgment.”
Yet, our Savior Jesus Christ came. He took on the likeness of sinful flesh and bore the punishment for sin and death on behalf of humanity. Through His judgment, He destroyed our sinful bodies on the cross. Through Him, we were raised together with Christ. He gave us a new body, now called the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Because sin has been removed, each person’s body has been restored to a sinless state—the original design of God when He created man. This body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It must be filled with the Holy Spirit, governed by the Holy Spirit, and must manifest the glory and power of God. Through the redemption of His only begotten Son, God has restored us to the original image of man—Adam before he sinned.
We who are new creations in Christ must be filled with the Holy Spirit and live out spiritual gifts. Every spiritual gift is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit doing God’s work through us. These gifts are for building others up and bringing benefit to people.
Everyone who is filled with the Holy Spirit has spiritual gifts and can live out the image of God. Spiritual gifts are signs that a person’s body is under the rule of the Holy Spirit, and that their heart is in submission to Him. God is then working together with man. This is God’s intention. This is the purpose for which He created man: to make His sons, His closest companions.
All of us who have come into Christ must know that our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit. Each person’s body should be filled with the Holy Spirit—inside and out—full of the Spirit’s power and glory. The glory of God should be seen upon our faces and even cover our whole bodies.
We are called to live out this glorious destiny: to have our bodies continually filled with the Holy Spirit, to live in the form of a living body animated by the Spirit, a body in oneness with the Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
