I read a picture book Ruth sent to me , “ I am American, The Wong Kim Ark story “.        1)Around 1871, Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco , live with his parents in 751, Sacramento Street, China Town. He always thought he is an American. His parents were Chinese, crossed the ocean to America, search for gold in order to live a better life.  Many Chinese stayed in the United States to do all kinds of work after the gold rush.                  2) When Wong Kim Ark grow up, hard financial times hit, Many white people blamed the Chinese for Chinese people get low wages and making them lost their jobs.  They said that Chinese could never be American, and the government passed a law that said Chinese workers could no longer come to the United States. And some white people were cruel to Chinese Americans. So many Chinese decided to go back to China including Wong Kim Ark’s mom and dad.   Later, Wong Kim Ark went to China, visited his parents and married, it’s an arranged marriage, then return to California, lived with his aunt and worked as a cook.                          3)He was only seventeen, he missed his family.  He set sail once more for China,  when he returned home to San Francisco, the customs official locked him in a ship for four months. Although he had a birth date certificate, it didn’t work. With other People’s help, Wong won a lawsuit and was freed from the ship . But the government does not recognize him as an American because his parents are Chinese. Wong Kim Ark’s case went to the highest court. The Fourteenth Amendment of US Constitution says: anyone born in America is a citizen . But the government said: the constitution didn’t matter . The Supreme Court justices pondered for almost a year . On March 28, 1898, six justices  agreed : Wong belonged here because he was born here. Wong won.  Wing’s victory means that today , every child born in U.S. is a American. 4) my mother had a close classmate, she went to America with her husband for her husband studied in U.S, and they had first daughter in America. They went back to China when her husband graduated. And then have another two boys and two girls. I often went to their house to play with when I was a little boy. Her eldest daughter taught English at the Military Academy. After the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, she came to the United States to restore her American citizenship. After returning to China, she obtained the rank of major general and became a Chinese general with American nationality.             5)Han Xiu (韓秀)was born in the United States. Her father is an American diplomat in China and her mother is Chinese. She was taken to Shanghai when she was one year old and raised by her grandmother. She was discriminated against in China! After the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, she returned to the United States and became an American citizen. She is a writer!   6)In addition to discrimination against Chinese, there has also been discrimination against blacks and women in the history of the United States. After fighting, such as Martin Luther King and Susan.B.Anthony, they gradually moved towards equality. The judiciary in the United States is independent of the government and can deny the government's wrong decisions. After I came to the United States, I lived in an apartment for the elderly. I was deeply moved by everyone's care for me. Everyone got along equally, and a democratic social culture. In China, there is a kind of political discrimination. Anyone who has opinions about the Communist Party is discriminated against and persecuted. One of my middle school teacher and three college teachers were persecuted to death. Bi Fujian, the host of CCTV, was dismissed because he sang a few dissatisfied words during the meal. China does not have an independent judicial system, and the Chinese people live in a political fear. The Chinese people should unite and fight for democracy and freedom!
