偽藤康奈爾

網上查了一下，其實對康奈爾的揶揄大概是從ivy league 自己內部早開始的。 事實也是，Cornell 是個outlier， Cornell 從骨子裏和其他七根藤是不一樣的。 查閱為什麽有fake ivy Cornell一說的過程，不僅了解了康的曆史，也是一個fun的過程。 最終得到的結論是Cornell 是一個令人驕傲的學校，因著它獨特的曆史，經曆和堅持的信念。 

為什麽被叫做偽藤呢？

1。 Cornell 建校在1865，是最年輕的ivy school。 應該是建校後即加入了ivy league 這一vibe （當時還沒這個名字）。 Cornell 是一個發了科技橫財的農民建的，大概這出身在7個大哥麵前就抬不起頭。 。但Cornell 是一個true American University，美國建國後的第一個大學。 Cornell也是唯一一個和slavery 沒有 connection 的 藤。 IVY League的另外七個都是colonial colleges。 這個被一個農民建立起來的大學，開始被稱cow college， 卻是具有超越時代的關注平民的人文理念，diverse和inclusiveness 一開始就流在Cornell的血液中，最喜歡下麵這段話：

“Truthfully, it’s because Cornell was the only one which did not discriminate against women, minorities, or by class from the beginning, by charter. Discrimination is the essence of any elite institution. Ezra Cornell was on the right side of history. That is all”

所以康的本質是：

“Cornell was founded to teach practical knowledge for the new industrial age to everybody. Ezra Cornell was a Quaker farmer who made his fortune by inventing a telegraph wire stringing machine. Cornell has an Ag school as well as engineering and liberal arts. It even has an architecture school, something you would have had to go to Europe for otherwise. It was co-ed from the start and non-denominational.”

站在今天的角度，這個偽字應該是Cornell最驕傲的character： Cornell 從建校的第一天就是coed，就對女人 和minority 開放。 誰知道Yale是哪一年才招女生的？ 
“These are the egalitarian principles that Cornell’s founders had in mind when the university was founded in 1865, which is relatively recent compared to Yale. Classes started in 1868 and the inaugural class graduated in 1872. The first woman graduated in 1873. Yale had no such principles. Yale didn’t even admit women until 1969.”

但是，有趣的是Cornell的co funder Andrew Dickson White was a Yalie。 
Cornell 也不是一個religious school。 Also by design，Cornell doesn’t even have a religious tradition in its history! Incredible outlier.

2。Cornell 的contract colleges也是紐約 state funded。這個當然會影響康contract colleges的selectiveness， elitism 和 self reliance。 當時我覺得這其實是個strength， 且不說contract college可以得到大筆state的錢，更重要的， 康有一個 pretty good sports program 所以學校的school spirit 是非常強烈的。  但是，這個state contract的特點 is quite a strike for a group that prides itself on exclusion and snob-knobbery。 

當斯坦福夫婦toured東部七個藤校以後，來到了山溝溝裏的Cornell，即刻就明白了，他們心目中的學校是Cornell這樣子的，在Cornell 學校和校友的幫助下，斯坦福終於建立了今天超越Ivy  leagure 紫檀的#0學校。 其實有人說康和UCB相似，其實也不無道理，在很多方麵這兩個學校on par with each other。但康還是有很濃厚的私立privilege的一麵。訪校時候，走到距離西campus那裏，看到長街上爬的全部是豪華車的感覺和在engineering樓裏是很不一樣的。 要我說，康是S和UCB的混合體，既有prestigious的特點，也不妨礙具有追求practical的本質。 

一個學校並非適合所有人，特別是isolated在山溝溝裏，雖然山溝溝是人間仙境似的美麗。我家兩娃，一個是perfect的學校，一個基本不適合。 所以如何選擇，家長孩子多了解去學校訪問，才能做出sound的決定。
