I composed this for the day and for Tsuyu as well. How often does the bright moon appear? Holding my cup, I ask the blue sky. Tonight, I do not know, which year It is in the palace on high? I would go above, riding the air; In the celestial castles there, The cold, I’m afraid, I couldn’t bear. To dance there with a cool shadow whirled Is not better than this human world. Thus turns around the moonglow, From red roofs to my window, And floods my sleepless sorrow. ’Gainst man the moon should bear no spite. Why, then, when people part is it round and bright? People gather and part again, The moon undergoes wax and wane, One can never perfection attain. How I wish man could live forever And share her fair light everywhere. 楊憲益譯文: Shui Diao Ge Tou To the Tune of Prelude to Water Melody Su Shi On the Mid-Autumn Festival of the year Bingchen, I drank happily till dawn and wrote this in my cups while thinking of Ziyou. Bright moon, when was your birth? Wine cup in hand, I ask the deep blue sky; Not knowing what year it is tonight In those celestial palaces on high. I long to fly back on the wind, Yet dread those crystal towers, those courts of jade, Freezing to death among those icy heights! Instead, I rise to dance with my pale shadow; Better off, after all, in the world of men. Rounding the red pavilion, Stooping to look through gauze windows, She shines on the sleepless. The moon should know no sadness; Why, then, is she always full when dear ones are parted? For men, the grief of parting, joy of reunion, Just as the moon wanes and waxes, is bright or dim; Always some flaw ?and so it has been since of old. My one wish for you, then, is long life And a share in this loveliness far, far away! 許淵衝譯文: Prelude to Water Melody (Northern Song dynasty Su Shi 1037-1101A.D.) How long will the full moon appear? Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky. I do not know what time of the year It would be tonight in the palace on high. Riding the wind, there I would fly, Yet I’m afraid the crystalline palace would be Too high and cold for me. I rise and dance, with my shadow I play. On high as on earth, would it be as gay? The moon goes round the mansions red Through gauze-draped window soft to shed Her light upon the sleepless bed. Why then when people part, is the oft full and bright? Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again; The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane. There has been nothing perfect since the olden days. So let us wish that man Will live long as he can! Though miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays. 林語堂譯文: How rare the moon, so round and clear! With cup in hand, I ask of the blue sky, "I do not know in the celestial sphere What name this festive night goes by?" I want to fly home, riding the air, But fear the ethereal cold up there, The jade and crystal mansions are so high! Dancing to my shadow, I feel no longer the mortal tie. She rounds the vermilion tower, Stoops to silk-pad doors, Shines on those who sleepless lie. Why does she, bearing us no grudge, Shine upon our parting, reunion deny? But rare is perfect happiness-- The moon does wax, the moon does wane, And so men meet and say goodbye. I only pray our life belong, And our souls together heavenward fly!
