Competition categories are based on dance division, age, and levels. Competition organizers may combine age groups, etc.
Dance Divisions
- Amateur dance couples
- Pro/Am: profession teacher dancing with their amateur student
- Professional dance couples
Age Categories
- Pre-Teen I: ~9 years old (in the calendar year)
- Pre-Teen II: 10~11 years old
- Junior I: 12~13 years old
- Junior II: 14~15 years old
- Youth: 16~18 years old
- Under 21: 16 ~ 20 years old
- Adult: >= 19 years old
- Senior I: >= 35
- Senior II: >= 45 (both members of the couple must meet age requirements, except in mixed proficiency event)
- Senior III: >= 55 (both members of the couple must meet age requirements, except in mixed proficiency event)
- Pre-Teen: 11 & younger
- Junior: 12-15
- Youth/Adult 1: 16-30
- Adult 2: 31-40
- Adult 3: 41-50
- B1: 51-60
- B2: 61-70
- C1: 71-80
- C2: 81+
Competition Levels
Competition levels include Newcomer, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Championship. A lot of competitions offer specific series that include Pre-Novice, Novice, Pre-Championship, and Championship.
- Syllabus Events at different skill levels: Newcomer, Bronze, Silver, Gold.
- Pre-Novice usually consists of 2 dances. No sequins are allowed on costumes at this level and choreography is basic in nature.
- Novice consists of two or three dances. Novice is open to any costumes and choreography contains both basic dance moves and fancy and expressive movements as well.
- Pre-Championship usually consists of 4 dances.
- Championships all 10 dances.

- Bronze (2 dance event: Waltz, Quickstep; Cha Cha and Jive)
- Pre-Bronze (single dance event)
- Intermediate Bronze (single dance event)
- Full Bronze (single dance event)
- Open Bronze (single dance event)
- Silver (3 dance event: Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep)
- Pre-Silver (single dance event)
- Intermediate Silver (single dance event)
- Full Silver (single dance event)
- Open Silver (single dance event)
- Gold (4 dance event: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep; Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive)
- Pre-Gold (single dance event)

- Full Gold (single dance event)
- Open Gold (single dance event)
