Although the holiday season has passed, there are still a few lingering post-holiday parties and galas happening this winter (Frostiball, anyone?). A few weeks ago, I stopped by Live at Five to talk cocktail frocks and what to wear to parties. Here are a few trends I discussed that are hot this winter.

Red-dy to Wear
This spicy shade is a head-turner and—bonus—it looks good on all skin tones. I especially love crimson when it’s in a structured dress, or, like the two dresses I showed during the segment, when it’s got a bit of embellishment, like beading or lace. Of course in a shade so bright, you can also get away with a simple structured sheath, too. Choose a blue-red shade if you have cool undertones or fair coloring and an orange-red hue if you’re a brunette or have medium, dark or olive skin.

Noir for Night
The LBD is a foolproof look. Amp up the fun factor by updating the look with a bit of fun detail, like ruffles or beading. Like the frock I featured during the segment, layers of ruffles also are forgiving and flattering, too.
All that Glitters
As a magpie myself, I love anything that sparkles and shimmers. Go all out and wear a head-to-toe sequin number or choose a dress with an embellished pattern.
Pattern Play
For an unconventional take on evening wear, I like a sophisticated print. A high-neck sleeveless version in an abstract leopard print and a lace-print sheath like I talked about in the segment are super chic options.
Good as Gold
Nothing says “celebration” like a gleamy metallic frock. Pick out a fun, short swingy dress, a long-sleeve sheath or an art deco-inspired number for a standout ensemble.
